I noticed some time ago at the recycling dumpsters behind the Town Office that items acceptable for recycling in the dumpster for cans, glass bottles, aluminum, etc. included “aseptic” containers. I called All Waste to inquire if that packaging was also acceptable to them, and I was assured that it was. So for at least a year I have been placing my empty half-gallon milk and orange juice aseptic (waxy coated) cartons in our bin for cans and bottles. On reading the recently circulated flyer concerning All Waste’s single stream recycling, I noticed that aseptic containers were not listed under acceptable “food and beverage containers.” So I phoned All Waste once again and spoke with Corrine who assured me that these containers are perfectly acceptable for recycling. She said that they simply copied the general guidelines published by CRRC (CT Resource Recycling Authority) in their recent flyer. Note, too, that these containers are not only for milk and OJ, but many other liquids (soups, broth, etc.) are packaged this way. All are recyclable.
In order to protect our environment to the extent we can by maximizing recycling, I hope we will all cooperate. Submitted by Barbara Massy
